Resources

Tailor-made

I make extensive use of AI to develop resources tailored to your learning objectives, your level, and your professional interests. This might take the form of a reading exercise based on our session notes, a mind map of appropriate vocabulary, or a fill-in exercise to practise use of a specific aspect of the language that we have dealt with.

In all cases, you will be presented with tailor-made learning materials, not the generic old-school stencils you might find elsewhere. These materials will be shared with you via your B5 Works coaching dashboard.

If you are comfortable with it, I also find that recording short segments of our exchanges can be very useful. What does a listener hear when someone interrupts you with an unexpected question? Nobody likes hearing their own voice, but – in a confidential and trusted environment – the opportunity to listen to and reflect on your delivery under pressure can be very valuable.

Grammar — yuk!

I am tempted to say that I don’t believe in grammar, but what I actually mean is that I don’t see learning grammatical rules as very useful beyond the early stages of second language acquisition.

There is no logic to language. What we describe as “rules” aren’t rules in any real sense. They are observed patterns, riddled with exceptions. You didn’t learn your native language from a grammar book, and an advanced grammar text is unlikely to be of much use to you now.

However, if you do feel you need to refresh your memory of the basic building blocks, I recommend Raymond Murphy’s “English Grammar in Use”.
